Morskie Oko is one of the most scenic locations in the Tatras. The high peaks of Mięguszowiecki and Mnich and the face of Kazalnica attract mountaineers and the picturesque sights and the azure tarn do the same with tourists. From here they can start a trip to Rysy, the highest peak in the Polish Tatras, Wrota Chałubińskiego or hike along a beautiful, scenic trail through Świstówka to the Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich (Valley of Five Polish Tarns).
However, many tourists cover the distance of 8 km. along a dull asphalt road only to enjoy sitting on the veranda of the oldest hostel in the Polish Tatras. The ‘new’ hostel by Morskie Oko, as it looks today, was constructed in the Zakopane style in 1907-08. In 1976 it was listed as a historical building, together with the old hostel and the former coach house, and thanks to this we can admire it almost intact.
A Mecca not only for poets, painters, and tourists, but also for climbers who set off from here to reach the ‘dignified’ Tatra peaks, it was taken out a lease on by a mountaineer Czesław Łapiński. The Łapiński family has administered the hostel continuously since 1945 creating a warm, homely atmosphere, which makes you want to return there.
It is worthwhile visiting the hostel by Morskie Oko right now when crowds of tourists have disappeared and the fog trailing over the water brings reflection and calm. (ap)

Morskie Oko to jedno z najpiękniejszych miejsc w Tatrach. Wysokie szczyty Mięguszowieckiego, Mnicha i ściana Kazalnicy przyciągają taterników, a piękne widoki i lazurowy staw – turystów. Stąd mogą oni wyruszyć na najwyższy szczyt polskich Tatr – Rysy, Wrota Chałubińskiego lub przejść pięknym widokowo szlakiem przez Świstówkę do Doliny Pięciu Stawów Polskich.
Jednak wielu turystów odbywa ośmiokilometrową wędrówkę asfaltową szosą tylko po to, by usiąść na werandzie najstarszego schroniska w polskich Tatrach. „Nowe” schronisko nad Morskim Okiem, w jego obecnym wyglądzie, wzorowanym na stylu zakopiańskim, zostało wybudowane w latach 1907-1908. W roku 1976, wraz ze starym schroniskiem, dawną wozownią, zostało wpisane do rejestru zabytków i dzięki temu możemy je podziwiać w prawie nie zmienionym stanie.
Będąc mekką nie tylko poetów, malarzy i turystów, lecz także taterników, wyruszających stąd na honorne szczyty Tatr, zostało przejęte w dzierżawę przez wybitnego taternika Czesława Łapińskiego. Rodzina Łapińskich zarządza nieprzerwanie schroniskiem od 1945 roku, stwarzając w nim ciepły klimat i rodzinną atmosferę, do której chce się wracać.
Warto odwiedzić schronisko nad Morskim Okiem właśnie teraz, gdy nad stawem nie ma już tłumu turystów, a snująca się nad wodą mgła sprzyja refleksji i wyciszeniu.

Das Meeresauge ist einer der schönsten Plätze in der Tatra. Die hohen Gipfel von Mięguszowiecki, Mnich (Mönch) und die Wand von Kazalnica (Kanzel) locken die Tatra-Bergsteiger, die schönen Aussichten sowie der lasurblaue See die Touristen an. Von hier aus können sie auf den höchsten Gipfel der polnischen Tatra – Rysy – und zu Wrota Chałubińskiego aufbrechen oder die Route mit wunderschönen Aussichten über Świstówka zum Tal der fünf polnischen Seen durchwandern.
Viele Touristen bewältigen jedoch die acht Kilometer lange Wanderung auf der Asphaltstraße nur deswegen, um auf der Veranda der ältesten Gebirgsherberge in der polnischen Tatra Platz nehmen zu können. Die „neue“ Herberge am Meeresauge, in ihrer jetzigen Form angelehnt an den Zakopane-Stil, wurde in den Jahren 1907-1908 erbaut. Im Jahre 1976 wurde sie, zusammen mit der alten Herberge, dem ehemaligen Wagenschuppen, ins Register der Baudenkmäler eingetragen und dadurch können wir sie in einem fast unveränderten Zustand bewundern.
Die Herberge als Mekka nicht nur für Dichter, Maler und Touristen, sondern auch für Tatra-Bergsteiger, die von hier aus zu den stolzen Tatra-Gipfeln aufbrechen, wurde von dem namhaften Tatra-Bergsteiger Czesław Łapiński in Pacht genommen. Die Familie Łapiński betreibt die Herberge ununterbrochen seit 1945 und schafft darin eine gemütliche familiäre Atmosphäre, zu der man gerne zurückkehren will.
Es lohnt sich die Herberge am Meeresauge bereits jetzt, zu besuchen, wenn es am See keine Touristenscharen mehr gibt und der über dem Wasser hängende Nebel zum Nachdenken veranlasst und die innere Ruhe fördert.
