...was opened in Zakopane on 24th February, 1985, to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, by graduates of the Ludwik Solski Academy for Dramatic Arts in Cracow (Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Teatralna im. Ludwika Solskiego, often shortened to PWST). It is regarded as a ‘theatre – shelter’ for all those who feel a need to commune with art in a literal sense as the Witkacy Theatre aims to bear testimony to the truth of its time as well as to be a metaphysical, artistic theatre.
It is Witkacy`s idea of the Pure Form, understood in an unconventional way, that greatly influences the productions and the atmosphere of the theatre in which various recitals and concerts are performed. Additionally there are functions in the Theatre Gallery.
The productions at the theatre deal with essential, universal matters – Man versus God, Man versus Man, values and Man himself.
The opportunity to meet other people and communicate with them through the performances, exhibitions, concerts and other artistic events is the idea which is central to the theatre’s philosophy. Each spectator is not just one individual in the audience as a whole but rather an invited and warmly welcome guest. Above all, each member of the audience is treated as a partner in the artistic performances. The team at the theatre wishes to pose questions and debate with the audience without giving explicit answers.
The life of the theatre has its own rhythm determined by the dates when the summer and winter seasons begin, tours undertaken within Poland and abroad, the staging of premieres, the Carnival at Witkacy`s Theatre and the annual celebrations in February of both Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s birthday and the anniversary of the founding of the Theatre. These special occasions attract many distinguished artists and academics in various fields of the Arts to the Theatre.
During its 25 year existence almost 100 premieres of plays written by Witkacy, as well as classical and contemporary plays, have been staged in the theatre. The theatre has also participated in prestigious theatre festivals, which have brought it numerous awards and distinctions and it has always been immensely popular with audiences, spanning the generations, across Poland.
Today the Witkacy Theatre is a viewed as a cultural treasure among the other numerous cultural attractions in Zakopane.

...powstał 24 lutego 1985 roku w Zakopanem w setną rocznicę urodzin swego Patrona. Założyli go absolwenci PWST w Krakowie. To „Teatr – schronisko” dla wszystkich ludzi odczuwających wciąż żywą potrzebę obcowania ze sztuką. Teatr Witkacego chce dawać świadectwo prawdzie swego czasu, pragnie być teatrem artystycznym i metafizycznym.
To właśnie teoria Czystej Formy Witkacego, choć pojmowana niestereotypowo, ma duży wpływ na tworzone przedstawienia i atmosferę teatru, w którym prezentowane są rozmaite recitale i koncerty oraz działa Galeria Teatru.
Przedstawienia mówią o rzeczach istotnych, uniwersalnych – człowiek wobec Boga, wobec drugiego człowieka, wobec wartości, w obliczu samego siebie.
Najważniejszą ideą jest możliwość spotkania i dialogu z drugim człowiekiem – poprzez spektakle, wystawy, koncerty i inne wydarzenia artystyczne. Widz nie jest jednym z wielu – jest oczekiwanym i serdecznie witanym gościem. A nade wszystko traktowany jest po partnersku – poprzez spektakle. Zespół Teatru pragnie zadawać pytania, dyskutować ze swą publicznością, nie dając jednoznacznych odpowiedzi.
Życie tej sceny poddane jest własnemu rytmowi wyznaczonemu przez daty rozpoczęcia letniego i zimowego sezonu, wyjazdy krajowe czy zagraniczne, premiery, „Karnawał u Witkacego”, czy coroczne lutowe świętowanie Urodzin Teatru i Patrona. Te szczególne okazje gromadzą w progach Teatru również wybitnych artystów i teoretyków rozmaitych dziedzin sztuki.
W czasie swej dwudziestopięcioletniej działalności Teatr przedstawił blisko 100 premier, oprócz dramatów Witkacego, sztuki klasyczne i utwory współczesne. Brał udział w prestiżowych festiwalach i przeglądach teatralnych, które przyniosły mu liczne nagrody i wyróżnienia. Cieszy się dużym powodzeniem wśród publiczności wielopokoleniowej z całej Polski.
Dziś Teatr Witkacego jest perłą wśród wielu atrakcji kulturalnych Zakopanego.

...entstand am 24. Februar 1985 in Zakopane zum hundertsten Geburtstag seines Schutzpatrons. Es wurde durch Absolventen der Staatlichen Theaterhochschule in Kraków gegründet. Es ist ein Theater, das eine „Schutzhütte“ für alle Menschen darstellt, die ein stets lebhaftes Bedürfnis verspüren, mit der Kunst umzugehen. Das Witkacy-Theater möchte ein Zeugnis der Wahrheit seiner Zeit ablegen sowie ein künstlerisches und metaphysisches Theater sein.
Bereits die Theorie der reinen Form von Witkacy, obwohl nicht stereotypisch zu verstehen, hat einen großen Einfluss auf die kreierten Vorstellungen und die Atmosphäre im Theater, in dem verschiedene Recitale und Konzerte stattfinden sowie die Theater-Galerie agiert.
Die Aufführungen handeln von signifikanten und universalen Dingen – vom Menschen in der Gegenüberstellung zu Gott, zum Mitmenschen, zu Werten und zu sich selbst.
Die wichtigste Idee des Theaters ist die Möglichkeit der Begegnung und des Dialoges mit dem anderen Menschen, und zwar durch Aufführungen, Ausstellungen, Konzerte und andere künstlerische Ereignisse. Der Zuschauer ist dabei nicht einer unter Mehreren, sondern ein erwarteter und herzlich willkommener Gast. Das wichtigste ist aber, dass er – durch die Aufführungen – wie ein Partner behandelt wird. Das Theaterensemble möchte Fragen stellen und mit seinem Publikum diskutieren, ohne eindeutige Antworten zu geben.
Das Leben dieser Bühne ist seinem eigenem Rhythmus unterstellt, der durch die Eröffnung der Sommer- und Wintersaison, Gastspiel-Touren im In- und Ausland, Uraufführungen, „den Witkacy-Karneval” oder die alljährliche Feier des Geburtstages des Theaters und des Schutzpatrons im Februar bestimmt wird. Bei diesen besonderen Anlässen versammeln sich im Theater auch hervorragender Künstler und Theoretiker verschiedener Kunstgebiete.
Während seiner fünfundzwanzig Jahre dauernden Tätigkeit hat das Theater fast 100 Uraufführungen präsentiert, darunter außer Dramen von Witkacy klassische und gegenwärtige Werke; es nahm an ansehnlichen Festivals und Theaterschauen teil, die ihm zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen einbrachen. Es erfreut sich einer großen Beliebtheit beim Publikum aller Generationen aus ganz Polen.
Heute ist das Witkacy-Theater eine Perle unter den vielen kulturellen Attraktionen von Zakopane.
